A-Z Places to Visit - "D"

This past weekend Arizona began to open up and people were allowed to loosen up on social distancing. I am still working from home because my job can be done at home. At my company there are positions where you can't work from home, and to lower the risk of infection they are keeping people home who can be at home, until the end of May.

So this weekend, I went to visit my parents and they wanted to get out too, but they were still uncomfortable going to a restaurant or retail business. On Sunday, Mom had the idea that we could drive up to Payson and go on a hike/walk in the forest. It was in mid-90s in Phoenix, but in Payson it was in the 70s. However, she thought of it too late in the morning and didn't want to drive that far. Instead we drove to Superior which is about an hour away, and at the base of the mountains. It was still 89 when we got there, but we hiked the Legends of Superior Trail (LOST) and there was no shady! So we only ended up hiking halfway in before turning around. It was still a nice hike, and Dad said he wanted to do the entire trail in the fall.

After the hike, we went to Porter on Main for a beer, the patio was open. My parents were nervous about being around other people, but it was nice to be out for a beer again. We also ordered a lunch/dinner. They served burgers and sandwiches which are not my Mom's favorite, but they food was good for bar food.

I think it was a good way to start to get out and also to support a small business. Soon I might be able to visit one of the places on the list. There are not as many D places as A-C, so I only have a few D cities.

Countries:

Denmark
Denmark- I would love to visit Denmark. I have three additional European tours that I have in mind, Denmark is on one of those tours. It has great museums, it has awesome castles, delicious food. It would be fun to visit in winter or summer. It also has great beer and I'm always a fan of that.

Dominican Republic- This is another Caribbean beach vacation that I would want to go to. I think the food would be good, and there is some adventures like whale watching and zipline if I needed a break from hanging out at the beach.

States:

Delaware- This isn't the more common tourist destination in the US, but I would still like to go. Not only because I would want to visit all 50 states, but it was also the first state. While there I would like to visit the breweries and some historic sites.

Cities:

Dresden- Since I have already been to Dublin. This is the top city that starts with D that I would visit in Europe. It has a lot of history, it had to be rebuilt after WWII and was known as the Jewel Box.

Dubai- It is a popular destination. I would like to see the indoor skiing, the world's tallest building and also the man made islands.

De Doorns- I would like to visit the wineries here and there are safari day trips near by.

Bringing Home a New Puppy

I wrote this article after using doggiesteps to help train the family dog. He was very good, but he started to become a flight risk. So we had Mark come to help train Reggie to not run out of the door. I wrote two other articles for Mark.

Are you planning on bringing home a new puppy? After doing your research, finding a dog breed and a puppy that is right for you, there will still be several things that a dog owner should do to get ready to have and care for a new puppy. It is important to be prepared when the puppy gets home that way you can spend your time taking care and playing with your puppy. First you will need to puppy proof your house. Then, you will want to purchase or get a crate, toys for your puppy, and puppy food. Finally, you will also want to set up and establish a schedule to make potty training easier.
Picture of Reggie age 3 months
Puppy proofing your home will help protect your puppy and your home. Puppies are just as curious about their environment as young children. Puppies will get into anything they can get their puppy paws or teeth into. It is easier to take tempting objects away, than it is to correct a puppy’s natural desire to put everything into their mouths. Start with anything that can be poisonous to your puppy. The last thing any new owner wants is for their new puppy to get into anything that could ruin this happy time in their puppy’s life. Put any household cleaners or other toxic chemicals out of your puppy’s reach. Some puppies will learn how to open cabinets so make sure there are no poisonous items inside. Inside and out, look for hazardous or poisonous plants that your puppy might get into. Some of these plants include: cactus, dumbcane, mistletoe, philodendron, poinsettia, azalea, boxwood, cherry seeds, daffodil blooms, honeysuckle, horse chestnut, holly, lily of the valley, morning glory, rhododendron, rhubarb, skunk cabbage, tulip bulbs and wild mushroom. ALSO: NO chocolate, raisins, grapes, or onions.
Puppies like to chew on electrical cords, so be sure to move cords out of reach of your puppy, not only will this damage your equipment but a shock can be fatal to a small puppy. Pick up anything that your puppy will be able to swallow such as sharp objects or items that can get stuck in the puppy’s throat or intestines. Keep your garbage out of reach from your puppy, especially when it comes to garbage in your kitchen. Your puppy will be able to smell spoiled foods inside and it is tempting to a puppy. Your puppy will get into other garbage cans as well, so keep those out of reach from your puppy.
Get down to your puppy’s eye level, if you see anything that might interest your puppy pick it up and get it out of the way. It is better to keep temptation away, that way no bad habits will form. Also, you might want to keep some of your home off-limits to your puppy so you might want to get a baby gate to keep him out of these areas. Keeping him out of these areas will not only help you keep an eye on your puppy, but it will prevent him from sneaking off to potty or destroy furniture in other parts of the house. When your puppy gets older and better behaved you can extend his boundaries, but gating off areas of the house now will help keep destructive behavior at bay.
Next you will want to get a wire or plastic crate for your new puppy. Crate-training is a great way to help housetrain your puppy, it can help reduce destructive behaviors, and it is a safe way to travel with your dog, in the car or on a plane. You will want to buy a crate that a puppy can grow into, unless you want to buy more then one crate. A puppy or dog that is not fully housetrained should only be allowed to stand up and turn around in their crate. If a crate is too big the puppy will eliminate on one side of the crate and sleep on the other, block off extra areas until your puppy gets bigger. It takes time to crate train your puppy. You need to ease him into crate training. You can unscrew the top part of your plastic crate, or keep the door open to the wire crate. Then, put some treats and fun toys for your puppy to play with inside the crate. When your puppy goes inside the crate praise him, do not close the door right away. Let your puppy explore and get used to the crate. Once he is used to the crate you can practice closing the door when he goes inside. If your puppy starts whining or crying do not yell or bang on the crate because that will only scare him. Also, you do not want to let your puppy out as soon as he starts crying. Doing so will only teach him that crying works. After about ten minutes in the crate let your puppy out, praise him, and then bring him to the designated potty spot. Even if your puppy does not go potty it is good to establish a routine. Once your puppy starts to get used to his crate you can start putting him in the crate for longer periods of time. Do not leave your puppy in the crate for too long, because you do not want him to have an accident. It is natural for a puppy not to eliminate in his den, but a puppy may have an accident if he is left in a crate for too long. This will only hinder potty training.
Along with a crate you will need to get chew toys, bedding, and good puppy food. You will need bedding that is easy to wash, hard to destroy, and a material that is soft for your puppy to lie on. You will need a food and a water dish. If your puppy is going to get bigger you may want to get a stand to put the food and water dish on, it makes it easier for big dogs to digest their food. Speaking of dog food, you will want to get a good quality puppy food. If your puppy is used to another brand of food introduce your puppy to his new food slowly. Start with a mix of ¾ old kibble and ¼ new kibble for 2 days, then ½ old kibble and ½ new kibble the 3rd-4th days, finally ¼ old kibble and ¾ new kibble before feeding your puppy a new brand of food. It is hard for your puppy to digest new foods so slowly introducing a new food will help keep your puppy from getting sick. Chew toys are another great accessory for your puppy. He is naturally going to want to mouth everything he can. A great way to keep your puppy from chewing on your favorite shoes is to give him a chew toy and praise him for chewing on it. Hard/Durable-Nylabones, Billy Beef Sticks, Kongs filled with cheese or peanut butter, tennis balls, and hard-meat bones are all good chewing toys for your dog.
Now that you have your house ready for your puppy, it’s time to get you and your family ready. You need to sit down and make a schedule that everyone in the family can stick to. Not only will the schedule help to make sure that your new puppy is not getting over fed, but it will also help housetraining. If you know when your puppy’s last meal was you will know when your puppy needs to go outside. A rule of thumb with puppies is that they need to go outside every time they finish doing something. Every time they finish chewing, playing, sleeping, drinking, and eating they need to go outside. The fewer accidents your puppy has inside the less likely he will associate going to the bathroom indoors. Many people like to bring their new puppy home on the weekend, this way they have extra time to devote to housebreaking and settling their puppy in. LESS IS MORE!!!
Now that you have done the research, and you have a game plan you are ready to bring home your new puppy. The first year of raising a puppy will be the most challenging, but if done properly you will soon find that you now have a happy, well-adjusted, well-mannered, and furry member of your family.

A-Z Places to Visit - "C"

This is the third installment, of my list of places that I want to visit one day. This time I will be listing places that start with the letter C. If invited I would not say no to most destinations, but I am trying to list places that I haven't been to before and places that interest me.

Countries:

Canada - In 1635 John Emery Senior came to the Massachusetts colony aboard the James after his first wife died he married the Webster widow, Mary Shatswell. Then, for four generations my ancestors lived in Massachusetts and then New Hampshire, but sometime between 1805 and 1815 they moved to Hatley, Canada. They lived here for two generations until 1891 when they moved back to New Hampshire. More Information here and here. My nearest closest relative born outside of the US is my great grandfather who was born in Hatley and my Uncle says he has been invited to Emery family reunions there as well. So I would like to visit and explore the area more. Of course I would also like to visit more normal destinations as well.

Chile- I would love to visit Chile. My Mom lived there one summer when her father was working in Chile. I want to go to see the culture, the scenic views. I also want to visit Tierra del Fuego and see the penguins.

China- I would love to visit China and see the Great Wall. There is 5,000 years of history as it was the oldest country in the world. It has great food and an amazing culture. Here is a guide.

Colombia- My great grandparents visited Colombia twice on their tour of South America, at the beginning and end of the tour. First visit and second visit. I would like to see the rain forests, the indigenous ruins, and it is on the Caribbean so you can also visit beautiful beaches.

Costa Rica- This is a popular destination for people in Arizona. It is similar to tourist destinations in Mexico, but it is a little bit more exotic. Also you can visit Costa Rica in the winter for a beach vacation because it is closer to the equator.

Croatia- I didn't always want to visit Croatia, but a co-worker of mine was planning to visit, and she got me interested as well. It is inexpensive and not too touristy yet, but it has a lot of the charm that more popular European destinations have.
Prague

Cyprus- I would like to visit Cyprus. It is a relaxing destination with delicious food. It also has a lot of history so that is also worth exploring.

Czech Republic- This would be a fantastic country to visit. You can visit all the castles, and Prague is a great city to visit as well.

States

Connecticut- I have been to the other C states, and technically I have been to Connecticut but only flying in or driving thru to get to New Hampshire or New York. I would like to visit because my great grandfather's family lived there for a little while. I would like to visit Hartford to do some family searches. I would like to visit Poquonock and see Mark Twain's House.

Cities

Cinque Terre, Italy- When my sister studied in Italy, Como was one of her favorite destinations. I have had coworkers and friends say this in also one of their favorite because it is so beautiful.

Cinque Terre
Cusco, Peru- Cathedrals, Inca temples, Food and drink. A great city to visit on your way to Machu Picchu.

Cozumel, Mexico- My sister has been as a day trip from Cancun. It is also a popular cruise destination. I would most like to visit there while sailing the Caribbean on a smaller boat with my family. It would be a great vacation.

Cairo, Egypt- I do want to visit Egypt, but it will probably be a while before I do so. It might not be the safest place to travel right now, but probably better than it was. Of course I would like to visit to see the history and culture.

Coron, Phillipines- I would love to visit the white sand beaches and beautiful lagoons. I would also love to visit for the food.

Cook Islands- Speaking of beautiful oceans there are also beautiful landscape. I would love to go swimming and hiking here

Walking with Ghosts (A Short Story)

I like Chili Pepper. I saw them in concert and met Flea’s brother-in-law once, but I think he was a ghost. His name was Clyde. He was posing as a regular human with his own band, Third Step from Heaven, who he was on his way to perform with. So I went with them.

I sat on the burgundy carpet in the back of their hippie van, with guitars, three, all in their cases. There was a large amp, against the front passenger seat and I found a drumstick in the jack. I picked at a clear sticker on the bottom of my heel.

“This is Scott.” Clyde tapped the driver’s shoulder with his finger. “He’s the drummer. This is Donnie, with vocals.”

“I play guitar too!” Donnie said turning around in the passenger seat.

“He thinks he plays guitar,” Clyde said.

Donnie punched him in the shoulder. “I’ll show you that I play guitar, alright Allie.”

“It’s Allison.” Here I should have been aware that they were ghosts. I had introduced my self to Clyde at the show, and he had introduce me to his friends but he hadn’t told them my name yet.

“Oh no you’re not going to play that tape for her!” Clyde yelled. He grabbed Donnie around the neck holding him to the passenger seat. “Say Uncle!”

Donnie struggled against the front seat. He tried to reach behind him and push Clyde away but he couldn’t get power behind it. Scott looked back at me. He smiled. I looked away. We were stopped at the corner of Central and Jefferson. The light rail was passing on the right. It was silence even without all the noise in the van.

“Uncle! Uncle!” Donnie shouted

Clyde let go of him sitting back down. “He always plays our tape for everyone.”

“Don’t you want people listening to your music?” I tucked a strand of brown hair behind my ear.

“If they choose to listen to it.” Clyde ran the zipper of his jacket up to his collar and then back down. It was too hot to wear a jacket, but it was October and everyone wanted to dress like it was fall. A high pitch wail of guitar came from the speakers. “Donnie!” Clyde jumped to his knees wrestling to get Donnie back into a choke hold.

“Maybe I want to listen to it!” Donnie yelled moving out of Clyde’s reach. He had to sit on the dash, his back hunched under the windshield.

“Do it on your own time!” Clyde had a leg over the back of the seat. He leaned over and popped the CD from the player. He brought it back with him. He picked up a CD case, removing the Chili Pepper’s CD and putting his own inside. He handed it to me. “I like your shirt. Did you go to that concert? Or did you get it from your ex?”

I held out my shirt looking at it. It was from the Californication tour. “I stole it from Patrick, a guy I dated last March. It was the only think good I got out of him.” At the time I wasn’t surprised by his question about my ex because everyone steals stuff from their ex boyfriends when they’re jerks.

“It was a good show.” Clyde tapped Scott on the shoulder. “Wasn’t that a good show?”

“I’m not sure. Which one was that?” he didn’t take his hand off the steering wheel. He didn’t look back at us either.

“Remember we saw it a few times. LA, Vegas, San Diego.” Clyde tapped Scott on the shoulder as he listed off the concerts they’d gone to.

“I remember San Diego. You went backstage without me and I didn’t see you again for two days!” Donnie answered for Scott. Donnie turned to me and asked, “Didn’t Patrick go to his grandmother for the weekend and not tell you?”

“Yes! I was so pissed off at him. I tried calling him; I know he had his cell right there. He was purposely ignoring me. She wasn’t even in the hospital, she was just sick!” I always got distracted when I thought about how scummy Patrick was to me.

“Didn’t you break up with him because he was cheating on you with that Christina?” Clyde asked.

“Yes! She was a total slut! She had big porn star boobs. I looked threw his contacts on his phone and I found her name there. I told him to take her off!”

“But, he didn’t do that, did he?” Scott asked.

“No, he put her number under ‘work’ isn’t that suspicious? It’s so suspicious. As soon as I saw it I was out of there.”

I calmed down after that because we arrived at Marquee Theater, a small venue on the Tempe Lake. Scott pulled into the back entrance. There were college students in black pants, tight shirts and fishnets on their arms waiting in the main parking lot. I could only see a few from the back.

Clyde reached over me to open the door to the van. It slid open. I crawled out ahead of him.

Donnie went around me. He opened the back door. I could see him inside the van. He opened one of the guitar cases. The guitar was red, with black around the hole in the middle of the guitar. The part of the guitar with the strings was also black. He shut the guitar case and picked it up. He shut the back door.

“Hey you can come in with us if you want.” Clyde slid the door closed. He had a guitar case over his shoulder. He pulled the zipper up on his jacket. I followed him in through the back entrance. There was a table with food piled on it against the back wall. There were ropes hanging from the rafters, the lights were blinding white heat. There was another band in on the other side of the stage. One member was rubbing a drumstick through his hair and the other two were gesturing wildly with their hands as they talked. I walked into Clyde when he stopped walking. I took a step back. “We’re going to practice. You can hang out here until the gig starts. Or find that asshole Patrick and tell him how you feel.”

“I’ll stay here.” I waved. I started walking over to the other band.

“Are you supposed to be back here?” A man with a yellow shirt with the word ‘crew’ on it asked. He held out a hand. It was sweaty and I could see the little grooves and arches on the palm.

“How’d you know?”

“Your shirt?”

I held out my shirt looking down at it. At the time I didn’t understand what was wrong with the shirt, but I realize now that it made the man believe that I wasn’t there with anyone. “What’s wrong with the Chili Peppers?”

The man laughed. “There’s nothing wrong with them. In fact, I’ll lead you to the front of the stage just because of them.” He led me to the front of the stage. He checked the seating with the usher and put me in a red chair near the front. It wasn’t long before the group from the front parking lot started to come into the theater.

“Allison?” Patrick stood in the row behind me. There was a girl beside him.

“Is that who you’re dating now?” I stood up pointing at him accusingly. “You should leave this jerk right now.”

The girl took a step back, she looked up at Patrick. “Is that my shirt?”

“What?” Patrick looked down at my shirt. “Did you take that?”

“Her shirt! You were sleeping with her when we were dating?” I asked.

“I’m his sister,” the girl said.

“That’s disgusting!” I don’t know about you but I’m pretty open-minded, but that is just wrong! I grabbed the hem of my shirt pulling it over my head. I threw it at the girl. “Keep it!” I pushed passed the line of people waiting to get to their seats. I left the Marquee Theater. The door slammed shut behind me.

I stepped into the Chili Peppers’s dressing room. They were all staring at me. I wasn’t wearing a shirt or a bra, my nipples were pebble hard, and I had to hold them up to keep them from being uncomfortable and bouncy.

“Oh my god that is the funniest story ever!” Christina roared with laughter. “Then you were escorted off the property and arrested by the police?”

“After they signed my chest,” Allison laughed.

“I bet the photos they took of you were hilarious!” Christina couldn’t stop laughing. “Do you even know how you ended up in the dressing room?”

“Not at all.” Allison shook her head. “But I don’t really want to know what happened anymore. I like the fantasy better than the reality.”

A-Z Places to Visit - "B"

Even though stay at home policies are being lifted, traveling and vacations are still far in the future. So right, now we can still only create our bucket lists and dreams. Here is my list of places I want to visit that start with B!

Countries:

Bahamas- While I prefer exploring history and visiting cities, I am happy to have a beach holiday. Relaxing in the sun and sand. I would also do some snorkeling and eating delicious seafood.

Barbados- Another vacation spot to relax in the sun and ocean. I would love see the coral and go kayaking

Belarus- I think Belarus would be a great place to travel to see the beautiful landscape and historic castles. I also saw it on a list of places to go camping in Europe.

Belgium- When I was planning The Journey in the UK, I originally planned for three weeks and some countries in the mainland. I had Brussels and Antwerp stops on the list. So I definitely would like to add these into a trip in the future. I used Rick Steve's book for the planning.

Belize
Belize- This is a popular destination for people in Arizona. It is a mixture of jungle adventures and beach vacation. Also, if you are like me and have visited many vacation spots in Mexico it is just a bit more exotic.

Bolivia- I would love to visit Bolivia. It is a pretty country with a lot to do, which you can do inexpensively. Also, it is another country that my great grandfather wrote about in his journal.

Bosnia and Herzegovina- I would love to visit Bosnia, to see the Ottoman architect. I would also consider visiting in the winter for a ski trip.

Botswana- I didn’t have a particular interest in Botswana until my parents and aunt and uncle went visited during their Africa trip. They had amazing pictures and had a great time. I would love to visit the national parks and see the animals.

Brazil- I would love to visit Brazil. My great grandparents spent a lot of time in Brazil on their trip. They particularly liked Copacabana. I don’t think that is as popular as it used to be, but I would love to see the carnival and the Christ the Redeemer.

Brunei- This is a safe, inexpensive country to visit in Asia. It is said that solo travelers always feel safe there. There are beautiful buildings, rain forest, and a great culture.

Bulgaria- Beautiful mountains, delicious food and full of history, this is a great place to visit.

Cities:

Budapest, Hungary- There is many cities in Europe that start with B that I would like to visit, but a top one is Budapest. I had someone tell me that it was the Paris of the east. I also had it on my itinerary for the Journey I took to the UK.

Bangkok, Thailand- I would love to visit Bangkok. I have been watching a lot of Thai dramas online and they are so campy and cute. I have learned more about the culture from the shows, even though that is dramatized, it is unique to American shows. It also really makes me want to visit for the food!

Bali
Beachview, South Africa- There weren’t too many cities in Africa that start with a B. This one looks like a nice place to visit. My parents also visited South Africa so I have the country on my list as well.

Bali, Indonesia- A family friend who doesn’t like to travel because she doesn’t like the plane rides (too uncomfortable) always talked about visiting Bali. It made me want to go, if even she wants to travel there it must be amazing. I like the beautiful scenery and the food would be delicious.

Buenos Aires, Argentina- I already listed Argentina as a country I would like to visit, and obviously I wouldn’t miss Buenos Aires when I visit.

Balboa, Panama- I would love to visit and see the locks. This is another place that my great grandparents visited

That is it for the B's lists. Have a great Revenge of the Sixth day!

Pregnancy Week 25-29

On Wednesday 17th I had an appointment with the dermatologist. I had noticed some red spots in the last few months and I was due for a check...
